Where the Idea of a Sustainable Park Actually Came From
The definitional fuzziness makes more sense once you look at how the role of a park has shifted over the last century and a half. What follows is less a chain of verified facts than a piece of intellectual history, a way of reading how landscape architecture and environmental philosophy have influenced each other over time. It tracks a much bigger question: where do humans think they fit inside nature?

The Park as “the Lungs of the City”
The modern urban park was a public health response. During the Industrial Revolution, cities grew fast and dirty, and the people working in them were burning out physically and mentally. Parks were introduced as a kind of civic lung, a designed escape from the smoke and noise.
Frederick Law Olmsted designed New York’s Central Park, along with Calvert Vaux, after winning a design competition in the 1850s. Environmental philosophy has a name for this worldview: anthropocentrism. Nature wasn’t valued for its own sake, it was valued for what it did for people: recreation, cleaner air, better moods. The park existed to serve human needs.
Aldo Leopold’s “Land Ethic” and a Philosophical Turning Point

That shift in framing gave rise to ecocentrism, the idea that nature has value independent of its usefulness to humans.
Landscape architect Ian McHarg took that philosophy and made it operational. His 1969 book Design with Nature rejected the idea that land should be shaped to fit human convenience, and instead proposed layering geological, hydrological, and ecological data to let a site’s natural systems guide its design. Under this lens, a park stopped being “a patch of green humans built” and became a node in a much larger, living network.

Three Parks That Put the Philosophy Into Practice
Here are three parks, in three different cities, that have built these ideas into their actual infrastructure.
Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, Singapore took a straight concrete drainage canal and turned it back into a meandering natural river. Under Singapore’s national water agency PUB’s “Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters” program, engineers combined native plants, natural rock, and civil engineering to stabilize the banks while letting the river flex during heavy monsoon rain. PUB reports that dragonflies and other wildlife now frequent the riverbank.
Enghaveparken, Copenhagen is a 1920s-era park that has been part of the city’s broader push toward climate-resilient infrastructure, designed to help manage heavy rainfall alongside its traditional role as a recreational green space. It’s a century-old park being asked to take on 21st-century infrastructure work. We haven’t been able to verify the specific engineering details against an official City of Copenhagen source yet, so we’re keeping this one general for now.
Westergas, Amsterdam turned a 19th-century gasworks site into a cultural park. The redevelopment preserved the site’s industrial brick buildings, sanitized the grounds, and rebuilt the area as a cultural park with sustainability as a core design principle, treating the site’s industrial history as something worth preserving rather than erasing. It’s less “build a new park” and more “let the park carry the memory of what was here before.”
What ties these three together is that none of them treat sustainability as a separate feature bolted onto a park. The water systems, the soil, and the climate resilience are the park, not an add-on to it.
The Other Kind of “Sustainable Park”: Japan’s Eco-Towns
Everything above describes parks people actually walk through. But “sustainable park” also shows up in a completely different context, one that has nothing to do with grass or trees.
Japan is home to several industrial “eco-towns,” zones where decarbonization and recycling industries are deliberately clustered together. Kitakyushu Eco-Town, in Fukuoka Prefecture, is widely described as one of the country’s largest, built around recycling facilities for home appliances, cars, and PET bottles, with more recent interest in offshore wind and hydrogen. Kawasaki Eco-Town, in Kanagawa Prefecture, is associated with a “zero-emission” model in which waste from one facility is meant to serve as raw material for another nearby. We’re relying on secondary reporting for these specifics rather than official METI or municipal documentation, so treat the details as a starting point for your own research rather than settled fact.
Neither of these looks anything like a park in the traditional sense, but they’re a reminder of just how much ground the word “sustainable” is being asked to cover.
