Kotatsu is a simple piece of furniture, composed of a low wooden table frame with a built-in heating system underneath. It has been a staple winter item in Japanese homes for centuries.
This traditional Japanese heating system is actually very sustainable. In this article, I will share all about kotatsu and places that you can buy it in Japan.

What is a Kotatsu?
Kotatsu has been warming up Japanese homes for many years. It is basically a low table with a heating system underneath, covered by a blanket, so that the heat stays under the table. We put our legs under the table and cover our lower body with a thick blanket. Sometimes we just lie down on the floor, covering our body warm in a kotatsu to take a nap. It feels like you are taking a nice bath, warming your cold body from your feet.
The origins of the kotatsu date back to the Muromachi period (1336–1573), where it evolved from a charcoal-heated hearth used for cooking and heating. Japanese houses were built to cool down the inside during summer. That means it didn’t have an ability to retain heat during winter. People used their creativity to cover the hearth with some kind of blanket to warm their bodies during cold winter.
Charcoal-based kotatsu could lead to fire accidents, so electric kotatsu were invented. It’s been a part of Japanese homes even today.
Why is the Kotatsu Sustainable?
Unlike heating up your room with the AC, kotatsu can heat your body without consuming so much electricity. Here is the list of heating systems available in Japan and how much it costs to heat up a room.
