We, women, must use menstrual products every month. Menstrual products come in plastic—plastic pads, tampons in plastic applicators, and the like.
Those disposable menstrual products can be pricy too. Women spend in average of 20 USD on menstrual products per cycle, costing us extra compared to men who don’t have period.
There are zero-waste alternatives to all the plastic menstrual products. They help reduce plastic waste related to menstruation. On top of that, they cost us less in a long run.
Here are zero-waste period products that you can buy in Japan.
Huge amount of menstrual waste
According to a paper on menstrual hygiene management waste in the UK, it is estimated that 28,114 tonnes of waste is generated annually from menstrual products. Disposable pads and tampons generate a huge amount of waste, some of which are ending up in the oceans and landfills.
However, reusable menstrual products are now available, making it possible to reduce waste even during menstruation. They’re durable, cost-effective, and often gentler on sensitive skin.
Menstrual cups
A menstrual cup is a silicone cup inserted into the vagina—like a tampon—to collect menstrual blood. With proper care, one cup can be used for around 10 years.
Although individual units cost ¥3,000–¥5,000, they’re more economical long-term—about ¥500 per year—and generate virtually no waste, which is a big plus.
Pros
- Reusable, zero waste
- Unlike plastic, they don’t trap heat or odor
Cons
- Must be sterilized by boiling water
Choosing the right size
- Up to 3 pads/day → smaller than 15 mL
- Around 6 pads/day → 30 mL or more
When inserted correctly, menstrual cups shouldn’t leak—ensure the cup has fully opened inside. On heavy days or while still getting used to it, pairing with cloth pads or absorbent underwear adds peace of mind.
How to use
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Fold the cup (e.g., into a “7” fold or U-shape).
- Insert the folded cup about to your index knuckle, angling toward the tailbone.
- Check that it’s fully opened (it should feel round).
- On heavy days, empty every 3–5 hours: remove, pour out blood, rinse, and reinsert.
- On lighter days, you can wear it for up to 12 hours.
How to sterilize
You need to sterilize the cup at the beginning of the period and at the end of the period.
- Place the cup in a pot, cover with water so it’s fully submerged.
- Bring to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
- Drain water, then air dry until completely dry.
Cloth pads & absorbent underwear—user-friendly for beginners
Menstrual cups can be tricky to begin with. Cloth pads and period underwear are easier to use and work like disposable pads attached to underwear.
Cloth pads can last about 3 years with proper care—so you only produce one pad’s worth of waste every three years. If made from organic cotton or other natural fibers, they’re compostable, unlike plastic pads that pollute the environment.
Pros
- Reusable
- Less likely to cause skin irritation
- Easier to use than menstrual cups
Cons
- Require soaking after use—maintenance can be the hassle
- You have to carry used pads when out and about
Types of cloth pads
- All-in-one: like disposable pads, attach directly to underwear—great for beginners.
- Holder plus insert: a pad holder (worn like underwear) plus replaceable inserts—convenient for changing on the go.
- Foldable: a single piece of fabric folded into a pad—can fold to hide stains and reuse twice, but lacks fasteners and may shift.
Period underwear
This underwear has 3–4 absorbent layers built in—ideal for light days. They don’t need changing during outings, but on heavy days, pairing with a cloth pad is recommended for better protection.
Washing instructions
It is recommended to wash the cloth pads and period underwear right after using them, on the same day.
- Rinse lightly—fresh blood stains more easily than dried ones.
- Soak in lukewarm (≈30 °C) water with soda ash, alkali wash, or baking soda for 3 hours to half a day. Avoid hot water (it binds stains).
- For stubborn stains, soak again with an oxygen bleach like OxiClean.
- After rinsing, wash in the machine with your clothes.
