As the temperature rises, it is hard to get by without deodorant. From a large variety of deodorant available in Japan, we want to find more sustainable and natural options for our sweat problem.
I have been using plastic-free type of deodorant since last year. I don’t find any inconvenience so far. It is as efficient and easy to maneuver as the plastic counterparts.
As for the ingredients, I find it difficult to judge what ingredients are harmful or not. While natural ingredients are better for our skin, their efficacy is still questionable. I recommend you to try different ones and see what works for you.
How to choose sustainable deodorant
Plastic-free package
Most deodorant are made of plastic package. Fortunately, there are more cardboard packaged deodorants available on market. Cardboard are biodegradable, so it is better than plastic. Deodorants in metal or glass container are also a good eco-friendly option.
Natural ingredients
Avoid parabens, synthetic fragrance and aluminium and choose natural and organic ingredients.
Ethical and cruelty-free
It is always better to choose ethically-sourced and cruelty-free deodorants, if we have a choice. You can look for the certifications before buying one.

For those who want to make their own deodorant, here’s how to do it. You can make just what you need, which is eco-friendly as it reduces waste.
Ingredients
- Baking soda
- Cornstarch
- Coconut oil
- Essential oils
Instructions
