I am aware that drinking coffee can be harmful, but it is hard to get pass the coffee time. It gives me energy and focus to work through a busy day.
While being conscious about the amount of coffee I drink and where it comes from, I also find that coffee comes in wasteful packages. Coffee drip packs and capsule machines are convenient, but create waste.
Luckily, there are zero waste alternatives that we can use to make coffee. Enjoy coffee modestly while reducing waste!
Choosing Zero-Waste Coffee Makers
Filter Types
Some brewers allow coffee-making without disposable paper filters. You just add ground coffee directly like a regular drip.
Metal Filter
Allows full extraction of coffee components, resulting in a richer taste. Some fine grounds may pass through, causing slight grittiness. Avoid the bottom grounds to enjoy a smoother cup.
Cloth Filter (Nel Filter)
Made of cotton or linen, these filters extract well and remove fine particles for a milder flavor. However, they require boiling before use and regular maintenance.
Ceramic Filter
Filters out impurities and chlorine smell, resulting in a clean-tasting cup.
Reusable Capsules
For those with capsule machines who still want to brew sustainably, reusable capsules are ideal. Fill with ground coffee, seal, and insert as usual. After use, discard the grounds, wash, and reuse.
Moka Express
A stovetop espresso maker, popularized by Italy’s Bialetti. Add water to the bottom chamber, ground coffee to the filter, assemble, and heat on the stove. The upper chamber collects the brewed espresso.
French Press
Extracts coffee with a metal filter, retaining oils for a full flavor. It’s simple to use and great for beginners. Add grounds, pour hot water, wait 4 minutes, and slowly press. Avoid pouring the bottom grounds for a smoother taste.
